Serenoa repens commonly known as Saw palmetto is a perennial native of south-eastern America and is distributed from South Carolina to Florida and in southern California. It is a palm with greenish fan-shaped leaves having thorny teeth along the edges of the leaf stalk. Saw palmetto occurs in almost every country of Florida. It is also common throughout the Indian River Lagoon area in both scrub and upland communities.
The fruits of Saw palmetto are useful in treating urinary problems associated with an enlarged prostate gland. They relieve symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia such as frequent urination (polyuria), urination at night (nocturia) and delayed onset of urination. They also reduce inflammation.
