Description

History

Pterocarpus marsupium commonly known as Malabar kino, Indian Kino or Vijayasara is a moderate to large sized, deciduous tree, around 30 metres high. It is a native to southern and eastern Asia found majorly in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and Taiwan. In India, the species is found in southern moist or dry mixed deciduous forests across hilly regions and throughout Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Orissa.

Function

Pterocarpus marsupium is rich in phenolic and flavonoid compounds that are potent antioxidants. The extract of Pterocarpus marsupium is an effective blood glucose-lowering agent and has been found to be effective in Type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. It also plays a beneficial role in reducing and delaying complications occurring in diabetic patients.

Vijaysara has katu, tikta, kashaya rasa, katu vipaka, ushna virya and laghu, ruksha properties. It is kushthaghna, rasayana, galadoshaghna, keshya, tvacchya, stambhana and raktashodhana in action. It alleviates Kapha-Pitta doshas. It is useful in Krimiroga, Kushtha, Prameha, Pandu and Medodosha.
