It is now widespread in East Africa, Indian Ocean islands, West Indies, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Hispaniola, Margarita and Trinidad. It grows well in humid valley forests, open forests, hill slopes and open areas of subtropical and tropical regions.

Function

Cassia fistula is commonly known as the ‘Purging Cassia’ as its fruit pulp is a good laxative. The pulp of ripe pods possesses a mild, pleasant purgative action due to anthraquinone glycosides, the active laxative components present in it. Thus, it helps to relieve constipation by facilitating bowel movements. It also shows astringent, cooling, tonic, anthelmintic and anti-inflammatory properties.
