Description

History

Boerhavia diffusa is a spreading, prostrate tropical herb commonly known as Punarnava meaning ‘that which rejuvenates or renews the body’ in Ayurveda. This herb is diffusely branched with stout root stock and many long slender, prostrate or ascending branches. It grows in moist and dry deciduous forests and also by the waysides, wastelands, river banks and hedges from plains to 500m. It is found throughout India, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Africa, America, Australia and Pacific Island.

Function

Boerhavia diffusa is one of the best herbs used for diseases of liver and kidney. The herb significantly reduces inflammation, urinary albumin, urinary protein excretion and specific gravity and increases urination. It acts as a urinary antiseptic and is very effective in the treatment of urinary problems, kidney-bladder stones, kidney disorders, enlargement of liver, cirrhosis of liver, edema and similar inflammatory conditions.
